ABOUT
Michael Benjamin Blank is a Los Angeles-based photographer and director whose relationship with visual storytelling began long before he ever picked up a professional camera. Born into a family immersed in the arts—his father a Broadway and film composer, and his mother a Broadway dancer who later worked with Disney—Michael grew up surrounded by music, performance, and cinema. Movies became an early fascination, and photography eventually became his way of exploring what had captivated him from the beginning: the power of a single image to tell a larger story.
Michael began his professional career photographing models and building portfolios for agencies including Ford and Wilhelmina. Those early collaborations opened the door to the international worlds of fashion, entertainment, and advertising, leading to work associated with brands and publications including Calvin Klein, Burberry, Vogue, ELLE, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan, as well as collaborations with notable talent including Bradley Cooper, Dick Van Dyke, Emily Ratajkowski, Jenna Elfman, and Lucky Blue Smith. His work has since extended across fashion editorials, advertising campaigns, commercials, music videos, branded content, and billboards.
What distinguishes Michael's work is his ability to move between two visual worlds: the precision and sophistication of high fashion and the honesty of natural, cinematic imagery. Rather than imposing an aesthetic onto his subjects, he looks for what is already there—the personality, atmosphere, beauty, or emotion that makes a moment worth capturing. Even within highly produced environments, his goal is to create images that feel effortless, authentic, and alive.
That philosophy extends to the way Michael works with people. He believes exceptional images begin with trust. His sets are collaborative and professional, but deliberately relaxed, creating an environment where clients and talent can move beyond simply performing for the camera and become part of the creative process.
Today, Michael brings that perspective to his work as a photographer, director, producer, and brand consultant. Through Straw Hat Productions, the production company he co-founded with model and actress Donna Feldman, he assembles the creative teams and resources necessary to produce photography and film while helping clients develop the larger visual identity and strategy surrounding their brands.
At the heart of Michael's work is a simple instinct: find what is beautiful, true, and distinctive—and give it the space to reveal itself.
Whether photographing a person, a brand, or a landscape, he approaches the image almost as though he has discovered something already in progress. Paradise doesn't need to be manufactured. Sometimes the photographer's job is simply to recognize it—and leave just enough undisturbed for everyone else to see it too.
was born in NY, then grew up in LA where he is based now. Michael has always been immersed in the entertainment world, his father being a composer from Broadway and now movies world-wide, and his mother with Disney. He's always loved the art of cinema, to speak his truth to the masses, to reshape the world into a more positive place. Photography being the primary visual component of the
cinema process, thus his photographic journey began.
Michael's career began with shooting for modeling agencies, building up model portfolios, which introduced him to fashion brands and magazines like Calvin Klein, Burberry, Vogue, Elle, and Glamour. This then led him to meet and work with many great talents and celebrities, and provided him ample opportunities to create online and TV commercials, printed advertisements, and other personal projects. This has led him to his latest venture:
Straw Hat Productions where he leads the teams and resources neccesary to produce photo and video content, branding and marketing strategies.
